Happy Fasting, Parents!

As we start our prayer & fasting I was reminded when we were doing devotion as a family that one of the best ways to teach our children is through modeling our lives to them. Yet & I have 3 wonderful kids—Gelo is 20, Monty is 18 & our princess, Lara is 10.

As we encourage our kids to pray & fast, May I humbly share these few tips:

First, make it a family event. Even-though our 2 kids are adults already, we still make it a point to do our prayer & fasting as a family. And make it fun, I love that our devotionals are in YouVersion already and we use it to make it more fun & even inter active. We usually take turns in reading and sharing. We even tried listening to it together, as You Version has audio capability. And this one is very important, make sure to process & pray as a family.

Another tip that we can share is let’s model prayer & fasting as Jesus did, not by legalism but through grace & love. I hope we don’t get stuck with traditional or religious activities because this can turn out to be one.

Last night when we were discussing what fast we would individually be doing, I was reminded of this when it was Lara’s turn to share what fast she would be in.

Instead of pressuring our children, let’s guide them, encourage them, show them the value of this devotion & worship to God from our heart rather than being an obligation.

Hope these best practices can help us as we shepherd our kids the value of prayer & fasting.

Train up a child in the way he should go;

even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
