It has been 6 weeks since I last watched a movie and I was so excited to watch Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps movie by famed director Oliver Stone. I chanced upon the original movie in one of our cable movie channels that was made years ago. I am so interested and intrigued with the power struggle. I was even dreaming or day dreaming being Gekko or part of his crew. Gordon Gekko is portrayed by Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf played Jake Moore the fiancée of Winnie (Carey Mulligan), who happens to be the daughter of Gordon.
The setting of the movie zeroed in on Wall Street where Gordon once controlled a powerful firm but lost everything and even got imprisoned for defrauding the government. I like this new film because they added a different plot like the family feud and a twist in the romantic angle. Jake, also a trader was torn between the two Gekkos, he was so torn between money & love. Gordon & Winnie do not see eye to eye because Winnie blames Gordon of the death of her brother. Gordon was languishing in jail when the young Gordon died. Gordon said it right that “Money is not the primary asset but time.†This is so true especially with our family when an opportunity passes us, you can never bring it back. There are times we think that we can make up for lost time like what Gordon thought but we just can’t. When he told Winnie though he can’t make it right but he can make it better, he was just thinking about money. Yet money can’t make things right, Winnie even quipped, “It’s not about the money.â€
Jake also faced this dilemma being drawn into the Gekko feud. He played broker between father and daughter. Later on Jake was astonished upon learning that Gordon stashed away $100M in a Geneva bank under Winnie’s name. Gordon, with the help of Jake was able to convince Winnie to transfer the funds to his name to avoid charges of irregularities. Winnie was supposed to donate the said amount to a foundation. But Gordon took advantage of this situation to get his money back and used it to set up a new firm in London. How many of us get blinded at times? We sometimes let our guards down when we chanced upon a tempting deal. Do we stop and think of the implications or check if it demoralizes our values? This situation tore Jake and Winnie apart; Winnie kept on insisting that it never was about the money and that he ever wanted was to keep her safe. Winnie broke off their engagement and Jake lost the most valuable commodity that he had.
Gordon was able to regain power and money. Jake met him in London and told him that he is about to become a grandfather. This changed everything; the news softened him and made him realize his mistakes. He rectified it by returning the money. But do we always get second chances like this and at what cost? Trust is not east to earn and once you loose it, it takes time to gain it back.
In the book Counterfeit God by Tim Keller he reiterated that prosperity could never quench the yearning for true happiness. Overall I like the movie but now I loose the desire to live the life that Gordon Gekko have. Now the appeal of money and power are not to my interest anymore, now I live to please God and to be with my family, that’s true happiness for me.
