Daddy's Newborn Guide: Rest for Mommies

My wife gave birth to our Baby Lara two days ago and it has been 8 years since we last had a baby and so everything is back to square one. Some might think that it’s kind of weird for me posting blogs about postpartum facts, tips, nutrition & lactation, but parenting is a partnership and taking care of our baby should not just be left to our wives.

Here are some tips for newborn moms. A mother needs to take good care of herself to rebuild her strength. She needs plenty of rest, good nutrition, and help during the first few weeks.

Every new parent soon learns that babies have different time clocks than adults. Every three hours a newborn awakens and needs to be fed, changed, and comforted. This can be overwhelming especially to the mommies. Here are some tips or suggestions for mommies to get rest. Daddies, we also play a big role for the mommies to regain her strength.

- In the first few weeks, a mother needs to be relieved of all responsibilities other than feeding the baby and taking care of herself. Daddies lets do our share, let us be a loving leader. Let’s help out in every way we can.

- A mother needs to sleep when the baby sleeps. This may be only a few minutes of rest several times a day, but these minutes can add up. You need to gain your strength and also when you breastfeed, you are not only feeding your own body but your baby’s too.

- Save steps and time. Have your baby’s bed near yours for feedings at night. Although our new baby Lara has her own room, she stays with us especially during night times.

- Many new parents enjoy visits from friends and family, but new mothers should not feel obligated to entertain. Feel free to excuse yourself for a nap or to feed your baby. Daddies, we have to be sensitive with our wives conditions.

- Get outside for a few minutes each day. You can begin walking and postpartum exercises, as advised by your physician. Part of gaining your strength includes exercise. Daddies, you can also grab this opportunity to bond with your wife and do exercise with them or be the one to take care of your little ones.

Psalm 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
