I was attracted to an article in the daily about making kids love words. I do believe that for the next generation to excel they need to love words. We need to encourage our kids to read. We need to regulate their time in front on the television and the computer. There are days that my kids and I just go to a bookstore and read. You can even encourage them to enjoy their school library. Gelo our eldest was even elected as the president of their grade level book club.
I really never grew up with books and I’m so amazed how fascinated my kids are in reading. It is not something that you just pick up, you have to learn how to love it. We need to be forever learners. If we don’t pick up this habit we would stop growing.
Among the books I read now are Desiring God by John Piper and Bringing Up Boys by Dr. John Dobson. I know books at times are pricey especially in our part of the world but be open to buying used books or try the different online site such as www.bookworm.ph where they sell books cheaper than in most bookstores. Also you can now buy or download e-books. Another way I learn is by subscribing to and reading blogs of different personalities that I admire, whether be it in ministry or leadership development.
University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University Literature professor Gemino Abad summed it up this way; that the love of reading of our kids at their very young age would build in them a sense of language and therefore identity.
