Shrek Forever After

Watched Shrek 4 with family and for me this is the second best Shrek after the very first one. We will sure miss this big green ogre.

In this movie, Shrek can be like anyone of us. Shrek was getting tired of his seemingly boring life, he was looking for some actions. Fiona reminded him of what he has going for him; 3 kids, wife that loves him & friends that adore him and yet he wanted more. Can you relate? Have we been complaining lately? Are you wanting anything else, more than what God has blessed us with already? Fiona was right in asking Shrek, she said: “Why does everybody sees it but you?”

Then Shrek made a deal with Rumpelstitlskin and was given a chance to get his old life back in exchange for a day from his past. That sealed Shrek’s fate, Rumpel was so eager to be the king of Far Far Away that he made sure that Shrek wouldn’t exist. Shrek was surprised why Donkey didn’t know him & much more Fiona. When Shrek realized that he was tricked, it was already to late. The irony of having the song “Top of the World” playing in the background while Shrek was having fun being back to his old self and then realizing that he gave up all that was important for him.

Can you again relate? There are times that we are so farsighted that we can’t see what God has blessed us with. Always looking to what other’s have and not counting your own blessings. Not just being content but being greedy already. Then when given a chance, we would trade all that we have for a dream or something to satisfy us. Only to find out later on that we would loose all that really matters. Maybe it’s the dream of making it big in our career or business and yet looses our family. What about a night with the hot babe that just realized your existence, it would be just a one-time deal. Would you trade your family for your satisfaction?

When Shrek wanted to back out from the deal, it was already too late. He was so into it that he forgot to read the contract’s fine line. He tried doing the escape clause which was to get a “true love” kiss from Fiaona but it didn’t work the that time.

At the end, he got his old back life, he fought hard for it, this time he was ready to give up everything to get back his old life. I learned early on that it is best to learn from other people’s experiences rather than experiencing them yourself. And in this case it’s learning from an ogre like Shrek.

Contentment is realizing what you have now and how when you loose it could mean your life. Being satisfied is cherishing and thanking God for what He has blessed you with now and making sure that you take care of it so that He can bless us with more.
