Gelo is our first born and coming from Chinese descent my expectations on him was admittedly quite high. I was raised that way, being the eldest in our family and first-born male in our generation. But I have learned not to exasperate our kids. Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Gelo is turning 9 this October and am so proud of the fine God-fearing young man he is growing up to be. We just came from Family Camp and Gelo acted as my self-appointed assistant Camp Director. Yet and I were so happy with all the accolades and acknowledgements we heard pertaining to our son. He was hands on making sure that everybody was comfortable and having a good time. There was even an instance that when one of our staff met and accident, he was he first one to ask for prayers. Hahaha, for 5 minutes I was in shock and I only snapped out of it when I heard him asking for prayers. He was even offering chips to our wounded staff and suggested marshmallows to stop the bleeding. To top it all, he even volunteered to accompany them to the hospital. That’s my son Gelo.
I remember early this year, he started saving his allowance because he wanted a guitar. He was able to save up p3K by March. When we headed to the store he had 2 choices to pick from, one was p2,500. and the other was p950. only. The difference was that the cheaper one had a small chip on it. He picked the cheaper one and commented that even with the chip it would sound the same. That made me so proud, he learned early on being good steward with his finances, something that I just learned just recently.
Proverbs 22:6
Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
I’m so proud of Gelo and deliberately now I show him how I trust him. Am confident that Yet & I have made permanent deposits on him, we have disciplined him, built a deep rooted relationship with him and first and foremost led him to a relationship with Christ. I was close to tears when we were in Subic 2 weeks ago when he drove a go-cart for the first time and even stirred our jetski. Am slowly backing off now and just coaching and watching him from afar. Of course am always gonna be there for him but I trust him enough to start letting go.
